Advanced Improvisation
A Six-Part, Intensive Workshop with John Dawson
Improv develops a performer’s spontaneity, making them more reactive or ‘in the moment’. In addition to being a mode of live performance, it can be used as a tool to develop original material and as a rehearsal exercise to help explore the sub-textural meaning of written text for auditions and plays.
This is an intermediate/advanced level, 6-week course in advanced ‘off-the-cuff’ improvisation techniques drawing on methods created and used by the likes of North America’s famous Second City Theatre Co., the forerunner of Saturday Night Live, Del Close’s Improv Olympics and ‘Impro’ guru Keith Johnstone. Performers will work through more challenging exercises and performance games to further develop and fine-tune intuitive, razor-sharp improv skills with an emphasis on quickly creating engaging characters in story-driven scenes and games. Comedic styles such as satire, absurdity and clowning are explored and utilized. The goal is to enable performers to move on to long-form improv as well as develop the ability to write sketches and devised theatrical works.
It all concludes with a live performance in a Dublin city centre venue.
